Addiction is met here with compassion — by addressing the issues at their source, not just the symptoms.
Alcohol, marijuana, opioid medications, and heroin are all commonly misused substances today; cocaine, amphetamines, and many other drugs are commonly misused as well. In the United States, the legal substances — alcohol, tobacco, and opioids — can be just as serious a problem as illegal drugs. In fact, alcohol, tobacco, and prescription pain medicines are considered among the deadliest substances in the United States today.
In short, no. Many people who struggle with substance use started out simply looking for a way to make a problem go away. Self-medication tends to snowball very quickly, and over time it can become deadly. Dr. Mitchell helps patients better understand and treat the underlying conditions so that they can be addressed in a healthy way that doesn’t involve self-medicating with addictive substances.
With both substance use and addiction, treatment is highly customized. Each person’s background and life is unique, and the things that led to the addiction may be unique to that individual as well. Dr. Mitchell works with the patient to uncover what prompted the issues so that those problems can be addressed at their source. Putting a temporary bandage on an addiction won’t work; addressing the issues at their origin allows the patient to become healthy and whole again. Dr. Mitchell may recommend medication, psychosocial changes, and/or support to best aid in a patient’s sobriety.
