ADHD

Trouble with focus, organization, and follow-through is treatable — in adults as well as children.

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a mental health condition that causes a variety of symptoms with difficulty in focus and concentration that pervades all areas of a person’s life. To meet the criteria for ADHD, a patient must display the diagnostic criteria before the age of 12. At times ADHD goes undiagnosed in adults, or the person has found methods to compensate until further difficulties emerge in adulthood. ADHD affects a person’s ability to retain information, focus, and concentrate, and people with ADHD often have difficulty with impulsivity.

How is ADHD treated?

Dr. Mitchell will begin by taking a complete patient history. This consists of a set of questionnaires completed by the patient and by one to two individuals close to the patient, typically after the initial consultation; in some situations a full neuropsychological examination will need to be completed by a neuropsychologist. The approved treatment for ADHD is stimulant medication, though these are prescribed with caution given the possibility of misuse. There are also non-stimulant medications that may be prescribed and are safer, depending on the patient’s concurring diagnoses and conditions. Patients and family members often benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, where they learn to recognize thought patterns and behaviors, as well as techniques to manage unhealthy or unhelpful behaviors.

Care across Louisiana & California. Dr. Mitchell treats this condition by secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth for residents of both states, with in-person visits in Zachary, LA as needed. This information is educational and is not a substitute for an individual evaluation.
